Jesus Ate Breakfast Too

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” .... Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”  Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

For some reason, that statement just makes me laugh. and together they had breakfast. I can just picture Jesus and the disciples hanging out around a campfire at sunrise laughing and joining in fellowship over fish and bread. and that picture makes me laugh. I'll stick with my oatmeal and coffee as opposed to bread and fish, but man what it would be like to have breakfast with the son. The back story of all of this is my favorite, personally. So far, this is the third time that Jesus has appeared to the disciples. Simon Peter, though, is struggling a little bit. The last time that he met face to face with Jesus was when he was told that he would deny him. And so Simon Peter knows what just went down. If I had to guess, he'd probably be feeling quite shameful right about this point. When he realizes that it is Jesus on the shore, he jumps overboard and swims to him. I would've done the same thing. I would have been like, "oh snap, thats jesus..." *flails to get to shore as quick as possible* When he finally arrives on shore, I can just picture him walking up to Jesus and beginning to apologize and repent for what he did. instead, Jesus quickly cuts him off and says "let's have breakfast, shall we?" It's like what he did didnt even matter.  If I were Simon Peter, my mouth would fall open in astonishment. This backstory is a beautiful picture of the word grace. I think so many times in my life I am ashamed of the things I have done. Every night I come to Jesus with my head hung low feeling defeated by the day. even in the mornings, I reflect on how poorly I am living my life. but before I can get out an im sorry, Jesus says "hey. let's have breakfast." Clearly, there's room for breakfast in every situation. But more than anything, the fact that Jesus would rather eat and commune with us than bring down the golden fist is just amazing. I was reminded tonight that Jesus does not come with condemnation, but with bread and wine and intercession. The man just wants to eat breakfast with us. Personally, I'm sure I would have a much better day if I ate breakfast with Jesus. We would laugh as I ate my oatmeal and he ate his fish. The best part, is I have all eternity to do that. I call dibs on having breakfast with Jesus every day for forever.

It's nice knowing that no matter what I do, there will always be room for a little breakfast.

so here's to Simon Peter. to grace. and eating breakfast with the savior. May we jump overboard to swim to shore for a chance to commune with him.

Hallelujah, Amen.
